Overview
Many drugs used for physical complaints can have an effect on our mood and behaviour.
Medicines for indigestion, acne, pain, infections, cholesterol, and anaesthetics may be implicated in serious mental changes: plus adverse reactions, or withdrawal symptoms caused by antidepressants, tranquilisers and other psychotropic drugs.
Golden Rules for Survival
Please review these Golden Rules which were requested and provided by many of the speakers at our November 2008 conference. This rare advice from those with unique knowledge of adverse drug reactions (ADRs) is now on the web site. The link is in menu on left.

Which everyday medicines can cause psychiatric adverse side effects?
Please refer to left menu heading 'Overview' together with sub-headings. The heading 'Medicines List' contains several of the medicines most reported to APRIL as causing psychiatric adverse drug reactions (ADRs).
WARNING - It can be dangerous to stop taking some medication suddenly. Anti-depressants benzodiazepines and corticosteroids must be tapered off very gradually. Other drugs too - so always go back to your doctor, nurse or pharmacist for advice.
Please read the Patient Information Leaflet that is provided with your medication. Keep for reference.
IF YOU ARE WORRIED THAT THE MEDICATION IS HAVING AN ADVERSE EFFECT physically, or having an effect on the way you are thinking or behaving, IMMEDIATELY SEEK PROFESSIONAL MEDICAL HELP.
Please share your experiences of adverse drug reactions (ADRs) with health practitioners and patients worldwide.
You can do this, by not only informing APRIL but also requesting a medical practitioner to submit case reports of adverse drug reactions (ADRs) to Cases Journals. A unique organisation collating world-wide ADR and other case reports for the benefit of patient safety. Organised by eminent doctors including Richard Smith, the former editor of the British Medical Journal.
